There are other good guys. You said so.
Yes.
So where are they?
They're hiding.
Who are they hiding from?
From each other.

SURVIVORS
I dont want anybody talking about me. To say where I was or what I said when I was there. I mean, you could talk about me maybe. But nobody could say that it was me. I think in time like these the less said the better. If something had happened and we were survivors and we met on the road then we'd have something to talk about. But we're not. So we dont.

PROPHETS
How would you know if you are the last man on earth? he said.
I dont guess you would know it. You'd just be.
Nobody would know it.
It wouldnt make any difference. When you die it's the same if everybody else did too.
I guess God would know it. Is that it?
There is no God.
No?
There is no God and we are his prophets.

BELIEVE
How long have you been on the road?
I was always on the road. You cant stay in one place.
How do you live?
I just keep going. I knew this was coming.
You knew it was coming?
Yeah. This or something like it. I always believed in it.
Did you try to get ready for it?
No. What would you do?
I dont know.
People were always getting ready for tomorrow. I didnt believe in that. Tomorrow wasnt getting ready for them. It didnt even know they were there.

GOALS
He looked at his father. What are our long term goals? he said.
What?
Our long term goals.
Where did you hear that?
I dont know.
No, where did you?
You said it.
When?
A long time ago.
What was the answer?
I dont know.
Well. I dont either. Come on. It's getting dark.

VACUUM
He walked out in the gray light and stood and he saw for a brief moment the absolute truth of the world. The cold relentless circling of the intestate earth. Darkness implacable. The blind dogs of the sun in their running. The crushing black vacuum of the universe.

PALMFUL
He lay there a long time, lifting up the water to his mouth a palmful at a time. Nothing in his memory anywhere of anything so good.

NIKANDER
'Non voglio niente da nessuno, io! Mi chiamo Nikander. Ex macellaio, ora autista della nettezza urbana. Denti e stomaco malandati, fegato così così. Della testa non c'è da vantarsi. Inutile chiedermi cosa voglio.'

BRUCE LEE
-Face it, you hate every single boy on the face of the earth!
-That's not true, I just hate all this obnoxious, extroverted, pseudo-bohemian art-school losers!
-Name one guy who lives up to your standards... Yuo haven't said anything nice about a boy since you got over your Bruce Lee obesession!

BIRDS
The world shrinking down about a raw core of parsible entities. The names of things slowly following those things into oblivion. Colors. The name of birds. Finally the names of things one belived to be true.

A formless music for the age to come. Or perhaps the last music on earth called up from out the ashes of its ruin.

ROSE
The small wad of burning paper drew down to a wisp of flame and then died out leaving a faint pattern for just a moment in the incandescence like the shape of a flower, a molten rose. Then all was dark again.

FRESCOES
Waking in the cold dawn it all turned to ash instantly. Like certain ancient frescoes entombed for centuries suddenly exposed to the day.

PERFECT
By then it was already evening. Just the slow periodic rack and shuffle of the oarlocks. The lake dark glass and windowlights coming on along the shore. A radio somewhere. This was the perfect day of his childhood. This the day to shape the days upon.

Are you okay? he said. The boy nodded. Then they set out along the blacktop in the gun-metal light, shuffling through the ash, each the other's world entire.
